The TVFF Silent Auction is back, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting nights of the year. This cornerstone fundraising event directly supports our club’s education and conservation mission, with past proceeds funding meaningful work alongside partners like the Alameda Creek Alliance, CalTrout, and Trout Unlimited. Every bid helps fuel programs that matter— from Trout in the Classroom to Boy Scouts merit badge education —ensuring the future of fly fishing and healthy fisheries for generations to come.

This year’s auction takes place during our April monthly meeting and features an ever-growing lineup of must-have gear, unique experiences, and highly sought-after buddy trips you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re eyeing premium equipment or a one-of-a-kind day on the water, this is your chance to support conservation while enjoying a lively, social club tradition. Bring your competitive spirit, bid early, and bid often.

    Event Details

    What’s New This Year

We’ve added a dedicated online auction catalog so you can preview items ahead of time — and yes, there are already some gems. Curious about a 4-wt Spey rod for swinging streamers? You’ll want to check out Item 46 and beyond.

    Take A Sneak Peek!

New items will continue to be added, so be sure to check back often. Even better, as we get closer to the event we will introduce online pre-bidding. This feature will allow members to start bidding 1 week before the in-person event and finish strong the night of the auction. More details coming soon, but consider this your early heads-up to get in on the action.

    Donations Still Welcome

We’re still accepting donations and are always looking for quality items to round out the auction. If you have gear, trips, or experiences to contribute, your generosity helps power the programs that make TVFF special. Please contact the Auction Chairman to donate or learn more.

Come for the bidding, stay for the camaraderie, and help us cast a stronger future for fly fishing!

The lakes allow for some dry fly fishing in the early morning on the shorelines, but mostly either indicators or streamers during the day with leeches, midges, and callibaetis patterns.

Rod & line weights/types: 4 or 5 weight rods, reels and floating or intermediate lines are more than enough.

    Tri-Valley Fly Fishers

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Protocol

TVFF Outings Policy as of September 20, 2020

As a club, the Tri-Valley Fly Fishers have developed and agreed to a set of required guidelines, protocols and rules in order to help direct our members on ways to stay safe on one-day outings, multi-day outings, or individual “Tag-Alongs”.

These protocols were developed by the TVFF Board of Directors as well as input from other local clubs which included a member virologist, various safety committees, and member experts. We feel that these protocols and guidelines are consistent with public health information and experts. These protocols are assured, observed, and enforced by outing leaders as well as members themselves. Extra masks, spray disinfectant and sanitizer are available from the outing leaders.

Please note that the Tri-Valley Fly Fishers accepts no liability for inadequate protection or the transmission of Covid-19 among members or guests. Therefore, each member should review the following protocols that the Club subscribes to and make an individual decision of whether to participate in an activity or not, based upon their individual circumstances and personal safety.

TVFF Outings protocols are as follows:

    • If you are sick with cold/flu symptoms then we ask you to please stay home
    • Everyone will be responsible for making, bringing, and consuming their own separate food and drinks
    • All attendees should wash and sanitize their hands frequently

      • Catch Success Rate: Varied

Fish from the beach to catch striped bass and surf perch using a 6-8 wt fly rod and shooting head, sinking lines.  See more details below for other types of suggested equipment.

        Thursday April 30, 2026.

        Cost:

Price: $25.75 (includes 3% credit card fee)

        Fishmeister: Jim Knecht

        Accommodations and Food:

This is an up and back day trip.  Each angler is responsible for their own lunch, snacks and water.  The group can decide if they want to have dinner in the area before heading back.  Carpooling is recommended.

        Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

        Suggested Equipment:

Rod:   6-8 weight are acceptable, but if you hook a striper, halibut or big piece of kelp with a 6 weight you could be unhappy. Recommend 9-foot 8 weight.

Line:   Use a sinking line, either intermediate or fast sink. Shooting Head T8/11

Leader: Monofilament – 3 to 6 feet of 10 to 20 lb.  Fluorocarbon is not needed. Fish in the surf zone are not leader shy.

Flies: Flies with red, orange, or root-beer colors in size 2, 4, 6, or 8 are fine. Orange color flies or Brown San Juan worm. For targeting Stripers, use a baitfish pattern.  Evan Praskin Trench Bomb Surf fly.

        Other Gear suggestions:

Stripping Basket: Highly recommended. This will help keep the flyline from tangling around your feet and kelp.

Waders with wading belt: I use boot-foot waders because the sand does not get into the boots.

Jacket: Highly recommend a light jacket outside of your waders and buttoned up to the chin, to keep the water from splashing over the top and down your waders.  I wear a pull over kayak jacket.

Dress for weather:  - could be cold, wet & foggy to warm and sunny and most likely will be windy

Glasses: Either sunglasses or shooting glasses (in low light conditions) to protect your eyes.

PFD – Personal Flotation Device:   Required, a good safety feature because the surf will sometimes knock you down. I wear an SOS inflatable vest.

Casting: Cast over the oncoming wave so the line doesn’t hit the face of the wave and get pushed back towards you. Retrieve immediately, as the fish may already be biting and spitting.  A good double haul cast will shoot your line 80 feet.  To avoid tourists and dogs, check behind you before casting.

Retrieve: A key to catching surf perch is to maintain contact with your fly at all times.  This means keeping a tight line with the fly during the retrieve.  Get the rod tip down, pointed towards the fly, and either a slow or quick retrieve (experiment with the retrieve until success catching fish), stuffing the fly line into the stripping basket keeps the flyline from snagging on things in the water such as kelp or wading boots.  Maintaining direct contact with the fly, allows the angler to feel bite.  Set the hook by using a strip set not by raising the flyrod.

Time of day to fish the surf?  Early mornings or late evenings, mornings normally are calm without on-shore winds from the ground warming up.

Where to Look: Your primary targets will be redtail, barred and rubber lip perch. Steeply-sloping beaches, particularly ones near stream or river mouths are best. The best perch fishing takes place on days when the surf is small and you should concentrate on the slots that run perpendicular to the beach and troughs and holes that are parallel to the beach.
Look for rips and cast inside the first line of breakers a lot of people make the mistake of casting too far. You may also find them in bays around docks, pilings and warm water outflows.

TVFF Outings protocols are as follows:

        ·         If you are sick with cold/flu symptoms then we ask you to please stay home

        ·         We believe in social distancing and require that all members keep a full fly rod distance of at least 6’ distance between parties

        ·         Everyone will be responsible for making, bringing, and consuming their own separate food and drinks

        ·         Please handle your own gear (and your own fish!) only.  No sharing for doctored fish pictures.

        TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online within fifteen (15) minutes whatever fee is described for that particular Event (trip) at the time of registration. Cost includes 3% credit card fee.

Cost includes a 3% credit card fee.

Once you are registered, there are no refunds for chargeable Events and trips.  In the situation that a member is, for any reason unable to attend, they may resell their registration slot to another TVFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists).  New participants must come first from the waitlist in the order they signed up.  The member cancelling is fully and solely responsible for contacting potential members to replace them and notifying the appropriate Fishmeister.

If an event/trip is fully registered and closed to registration, you may still sign up on the Wait List to be notified if there are any cancellations.  In such a case of registering provisionally on the Wait List, you do not have to pay until such time that you clear the Wait List and are confirmed for participation.

            Event Skill Levels:

            • Stream: beginner to advanced (some highly technical water)
            • Lakes: beginner with float tubes to prams,  some accessible shore fishing for lakes
            • Wading: intermediate in riffles with light slippery medium rocks
            • Hiking: beginner and flat with maximum 2 mile optional hikes
            • Catch success rate: good for beginners at Baum Lake, advanced at Hat Creek

This is a 3 night-4 day trip to explore  the 3.5 miles of fishable wild trout water at Hat Creek.  Arrive on the first day with late evening fishing, then three full days of fishing to follow. It is scheduled for the traditional large Salmonfly and Golden Stonefly hatches that occur during this period, as well as several other hatches. We will be fishing five different areas on Hat Creek from knee deep riffles at the Powerhouse and mid-stream to the gin clear, quiet flats, and to the downstream area of thigh deep water. This is a wading trip, although it is recommended to stay out of the water unless absolutely necessary as the fish are very skittish due to the fishing pressure. It is barbless hook, catch and release water only.  Fishing styles can include Euro nymphing, streamers, and indicators in the riffles, with dry fly presentations on the flat water.

The trip will encompass the Powerhouse 2 riffles in the early day followed by late morning dry fly activity (Stoneflies, PMD's, Little Yellow Sallies) below the riffles in the flat water to rising fish.  Mid-day will shift to the mid-stream shallow riffles for high sticking/euro nymphing, or indicator fishing.  Late in the day we will continue moving downstream to the meadow area for the Salmonfly hatch.

This is a combination wading and optional watercraft (days 3 & 4) trip and will require moving around frequently with some hikes of a maximum of about 2 miles in some areas. Individuals can choose to fish specific areas rather than transit between them during the day.

The 3rd and 4th days will be on Baum and/or Manzanita lakes depending upon whether "ice out" has occurred at Lassen National Park.  It is recommended to utilize a watercraft on both lakes, although fishing can be and is often successful from the shore locations as we did last year.

We will be leaving early AM from the Tri-Valley,  with stops in Redding at The Fly Shop for last minute supplies/flies as well as for gas and a lunch to eat in the car.  That will get us to check-in some five hours after leaving the Tri-Valley and put us on the water the first evening ready for the late afternoon/early evening caddis hatch at Carbon bridge.

            Cost:

Cost: The cost is $25.75 (includes 3% credit card fee)

Participant hotel and camping accommodations and food are extra; approximately $100 - $350 depending upon your choice of accommodations and food. And don’t forget your contribution to The Fly Shop’s continuing success…Camping is also available (see below).

Family Policy:  Spouses and family members under the age of 26 years old are included in each member's annual membership, and can attend events at no cost, unless TVFF has supplemental costs (such as guide or facility fees) for the event.  In such cases, each attendee must pay the appropriate event cost listed above.

Guest Policy:  Guests must first register and become members of TVFF.

            Fishmeister: Rob Farris, RFFarris@comcast.net, (925)286-5502

Accommodations and Food: Lodging is available nearby in Burney, CA which is inexpensive and about $125 per night.  I recommend the Green Gables if you won’t be camping. It is rudimentary but quite clean and comfortable.

Camping is available in the area at several locations, including Burney Falls State Park (about 10 miles away) which is fully developed, Hat Creek Hereford RV Resort (between Baum/Hat Creek and Manzanita Lakes about 9 miles away, and my personal recommendation) and there is also camping at Baum Lake’s PG&E dirt campground (rustic) 4 miles south of where we will be accessing Hat Creek in the mornings.  Rob will be camping at Hat Creek Hereford Ranch RV Resort, serving as the primary Club gathering location during our time.  This campground offers grass campsites for both tent and trailers with on-site showers, horseshoes, basketball, volleyball, and a chargeable trout pond on premise, and suits itself very nicely for families (which are always welcome on Club trips).

Each individual is responsible for their own food and accommodations.  Burney only has a few good restaurants and most close before 9 pm, so if we are out late it will be a challenge that leads us to either the local steakhouse (more expensive), a good local Mexican restaurant, the local Indian Casino (not much) or the bowling alley (pick your poison). There are also gas grills available at the Green Gables hotel which I have used before when I brought along food to cook.

Breakfast is available in town at a reasonable café that is good. Be sure to bring a lunch for each day as we will not be returning to town after leaving in the morning. There is a Safeway in town that does prepare their normal Signature sandwiches and salads unless you wish to bring your own lunches for the trip.

            Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Rod & line weights/types: 4, or 5 weight rods, reels and floating lines for Hat Creek.  5 and 6 weight rods for the lakes with both floating and sinking lines.

Leaders and tippet: Hat Creek:  Fishing style dependent but normally I fish a 9’ 4X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 4-6’ of 5 or 6X for the dry flies. Depending upon the weather we also hit a Trico hatch in early morning in which case you will need 7X for the #22-26 flies. Euro nymphing rigs (i.e. mono rigs) will also be useful in the riffles.  The Lakes: usually a 8-10' 3X leader (for indictor styles) with 4X tippet should suffice, and a 4-6' 2 or 3X leader if you wil be pulling streamers.

Other gear: Note that no float tubes are allowed on Hat Creek in the wild trout section.

Flies: Flies to match and we will send out a more current list as we get closer to the dates and better understand how the weather and water are impacting the hatches. Typically you will need Salmonflies and Golden Stonefly dries and nymphs in sizes 8-12, various nymphs (complete list to follow), and an assortment of dry flies in sizes 14-18’s (list to follow as well). The fish are very picky and this is noted as a technical spring creek type fishing environment with dry flies, so fly matching with either dries or emergers is important, as are long leaders (up to 12 or 14’) with excellent presentation skills in the flat water.  Euro nymphng is alos very successful in the Powerhouse riffles.  The lakes allow for some dry fly fishing in the early morning on the shorelines, but mostly either indicators or streamers during the day with leeches, midges, and callibaetis patterns.

            TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online (cost includes credit card fee.)  There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

            • We believe in social distancing and require that all members keep a full fly rod distance of at least 6’ distance between parties

            On-Stream Practical Entomology

            Prerequisite:

            • Highly suggested completion of an entomology course (TVFF, or on-line).

            Location:  Hat Creek, California

Hat Creek is known for phenomenal hatches in the early spring with multiple large and small bugs available to the trout.  This one day clinic will be occurring on the same weekend as the TVFF Hat Creek/Baum/Manzanita outing.

This event is primarily an educational event to develop observational skills in order to more effectively predict effective strategies for fly fishing.  We will focus on applying the learning to fishing later in the day for a limited period of time.

Each event is separate and needs to be registered for individually, if you choose to attend both.  Registering for the Hat Creek trip is optional if you so desire, or you can only register for the clinic.

            Class Agenda:

This one day on-stream clinic with a full time instructor will focus on approaching the water and determining how best to anticipate what the fish may be consuming that day.  We will be applying practical entomology to determine what food is in the water, how to anticipate it from hatch charts, what bugs and metamorphosis stages are likely at given times, and how to adjust during the day.  We'll also consider effective subsurface strategies in the event that hatches do not appear during the day.   And then apply that learning to our fishing later that day.

This class is for intermediate fly fisherman and above, or with the instructor's approval.  It is strongly recommended to have attended a TVFF Entomology class, or  an on-line course as an alternative.

            Cost:

The class cost is $41.20 (includes 3% credit card fee)

            Event Description:

Spring on the American River brings the American Shad back from the ocean to spawn starting in late April.  This Shad Fish outing is a 2-day, walk & wade outing.  Individuals can sign up for 1 or both days.

Shad are notorious for eating brightly colored flies. They will grab them when dead drifted under an indicator, swung on two-handed rods, or fished on sinking lines at depth.

The American River is accessed off Highway 50 near Sacramento.  There are a number of access points including Negro Bar, American River Parkway (Watt Ave), Rossmoor Bar, Ansell Hoffman Park, Watt Avenue, Sailors Bar, and River Bend.

I strongly encourage Novices to try this.  If we are lucky enough to get into shad, it can be a whole bunch of fun!

Shad fishing is very social because of the need to be fishing as close to one another as possible (but spaced apart enough to still swing your line through the current) in order to fit everyone into the run where we hope shad will be holding. We will rotate spots through the run to give everyone equal opportunity to hook fish.

Shad are often referred to as the "poor-man's tarpon" since they can put up quite a battle for their small size -- esp. on a light fly rod. A pair of Sungloves or similar half-fingered gloves are recommended to handle shad - which should bewash when you get home.

            Shad fishing techniques:
Generally fishing runs & pools.  Shad do not like to hang in riffles or rough water.  Look for current seams or runs. Pools with a current running through them are good.

Shad will typically be close to the bottom.  Water that is 4 -8 feet deep with even current flow over gravel is ideal. Clear water is important.

Early morning and evening are the best times to fish for shad.  I will start fishing at 2 pm on Saturday June 6, 2026.  Mid-day is typically slow, however you can catch the occasional fish. Bright sunny days are low percentage times to fish, however a cloudy day can definitely turn on the action.

            Techniques:
Cast across the current at a 90 degree angle. Do not mend the line. Get tight to the line as soon as you can.

Keep tight to the fly and avoid slack by keeping your rod tip pointed at the fly.  Follow the line and the fly with your rod tip as it sweeps downstream. Basically, swing the fly until its downstream of your position then start your retrieve. Repeat.

Sometimes it helps to give your fly a little action with short "pulsating" strips as it swings across the current.

Use a strip set to set the hook when you feel a strike.

Vary your fishing depth by changing head types until you find the depth where  shad are holding.

            Cost:

$25.75 (includes 3% credit card fee)

            Fishmeister:  Jim Knecht, jdknecht@pacbell.net, (408)506-2350.

            Accommodations and Food:

Each individual is responsible for their own food and lodging should you attend both days of fishing.

            Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

            1. Flyrod
              a. 6-8 wt Single-hand flyrod with a shooting head on a floating running line or an integrated sinking line.  Shooting Heads of various densities (Type 3, Type 4, or Type 6) are recommended. Head Type selection is dependent on the current speed and the need to reach the river bottom.
              b. 5 - 7 wt Two-handed flyrod with a Skagit or Scandi floating flyline with a sink tip head.  Sink Tip Heads of various densities (Type 3, Type 4, or Type 6) are recommended. Head Type selection is dependent on the current speed and the need to reach the river bottom.
            2. Flies sizes 2 through 8 with size 6 commonly used.
Recommended shad flies are Little Pinkies, Bloody Maria, Green Divas.
            3. Waders and boots with warm socks and one or two under-layers (you'll be standing in the river for long periods).
            4. Windbreaker or fleece (just in case it cools off)
            5. Polarized glasses and hat
            6. Wading staff
            7. Personal Life Jacket
            8. Small fly box, nippers, and forceps.

Leaders (mono or straight fluorocarbon) in the test range of six to fifteen pounds range should be kept fairly short - 4 to 7-1/2 foot length is the generally accepted maximum.

            TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online (cost includes 3% credit card fee.)

            On-Stream One-Day Small Stream Clinic

The dark plunge pool below a little waterfall is where a fish peeled most of the line from Dennis Smith's reel during an outing. (Dennis Smith / For the Loveland Reporter-Herald)

            Prerequisite:

Experienced with dry fly and dry dropper fishing including leader setup, tight casting, and fly selection.

Location:  Two Eastern Sierra Small Streams

Fishing small streams has great appeal for those looking for more solitude while fly fishing with the unique challenges due to spooky wild fish in tight environments.  We are blessed to have many such streams available in the Sierras to take advantage of.

                Class Agenda:

This one day on-stream clinic with a full time instructor will focus on proper leader setup, fly selection, finding and fishing key holding spots, and stalking skittish fish.  This is not a traditional fishing outing but an educational event structured around improving skills specific to fishing small mountain streams.

                Cost:

The class cost is $41.20 (includes 3% credit card fee)

                Instructor: Mitchie McCammon, sewreel@pacbell.net, (925)819-2039.

                Accommodations and Food:

This is structured as a full one day trip with extensive driving between streams specific to the educational objectives.  Once the specific streams are determined, based on runoff and flow conditions, potential locations for overnight accommodations or camping locations will be identified, but are not anticipated to be necessary.

Each individual is responsible for their own food and accommodations.

                Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Rod & line weights/types: 2,3, or 4 weight, 7-8.5' rods, reels and floating lines.

Leaders and tippet: Fishing style and stream dependent but normally we fish a 7.5’ 4 or 5X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 1-2’ of 5 or 6X for the dry flies.

Fly selection is normally with attractor and generic dry flies, as well as common droppers for sub surface situations.  More information on suggested specific flies will be provided prior to the trip for attendees.

                TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online (cost includes 3% credit card fee.) There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

                    • Catch success rate: intermediate to advanced skills required

This is the annual TVFF Club 2 night-3 day camping trip headquartered at Logger Campground, Stampede Reservoir with three days of fishing the Big Truckee, and Little Truckee and Prosser Creek for rainbow, brown trout, Lahontan Cutthroat, and Kokanee Salmon. It coincides with the peak of multiple aquatic hatches in the area (see the hatch chart; Truckee hatch chart ), and will include river wading opportunities. Fishing techniques to be used include traditional indicator nymphing, Euro nymphing, streamers, and dry fly techniques.  Day 1 is a travel day with late evening fishing.

Registration is expected to be large so the camping group may be split up to fish the various locations during each day as to not crowd each other. We will be fishing the Big Truckee at Glenshire, Boca, Prosser Creek and downstream in the Farad area with access via a 2 mile riverside trail. We will also be splitting into smaller groups to fish the Little Truckee on the main river in three separate locations, as well as the Boca inlet and Cave Rock. I will be asking a few folks to be assistant Fishmeisters on the trip for each group, and we will be providing maps as well.  And then we'll play musical chairs and shift the groups to new locations each day with full reports that evening over beer and scotch around the campfire.

Hatches during this period are profuse and varied.  We will see Golden Stones, PMD's, Pinkies, some Caddis, and usually a good large Green Drake hatch.  You may want to stop in Mountain Hardware in Truckee (an excellent selection of local guide tied flies) to check on their excellent reports and  superb fly selection, as well as anything else you may need for the week.  In addition there is a new fly shop in downtown Truckee that is well stocked.

                      Cost:

Cost: The cost is $25.75 (includes 3% credit card fee)

Family Policy:  Spouses and family members under the age of 26 years old are included in each member's annual membership, and can attend events at no cost, unless TVFF has supplemental costs (such as guide or facility fees) for the event.  In such cases, each attendee must pay the appropriate event cost listed above.

Participant hotel and camping accommodations and food are extra; approximately $100 - $350 depending upon your choice of accommodations and food.  Camping is also available (see below).

                      Fishmeister:  Rob Farris, RFFarris@comcast.net. (925)286-5502.

                      Accommodations and Food:

Campsite Reservations: You should make your campsite reservations now, as Logger CG books up quickly every year.  I will be camping for the three nights in campsite #114,.  It is a smaller site so not as much room as in previous years due to the early bookings in the CG which is filling up quickly.

For those not on the list above or bringing an RV/Motorhome, you may want to secure a campsite at Logger Campground ASAP.  My site is located in the loop close to the kiosk check-in station and restrooms. Campsites are priced based on the number of campers and/or trailer access.

This campground on Stampede Reservoir (just above the Little Truckee) is quite popular and fills up quickly, so you should make your reservations as soon as possible to secure a site. The reservation site is listed below, as are the maps availability links.

Each individual is responsible for their own food, however we are planning for a group potluck the first evening and will be share current conditions, gear, flies, etc.  Requested menu offerings will be distributed later.

                      Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Rod & line weights/types: 4, 5 or 6 weight rods, reels and floating lines

Leaders and tippet: Fishing style dependent, but normally I fish a 9’ 4X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 4-6’ of 5 or 6X for the dry flies.  The Truckee is home to large browns so if you plan on throwing some streamer meat you'll want a 5 or 6 weight rod as the current flow can require a stouter rod.  Lake fishing will be dependent upon your style as well, but a 5 or 6 weight rod will normally suffice.

Other gear: Standard waders, boots, and wading staffs and normal fishing wear.

Flies: Flies to match hatches above and we will send out a more current list as we get closer to the dates and better understand how the weather and water are impacting the hatches.

Little Truckee River improves fishing habitat | YOUR FRIEND IN HIGH PLACES

                      Prerequisite:

                      • Experienced with dry fly fishing including leader setup, presentation casting, and fly selection.

Location:  Little Truckee River Creek, California

The Little Truckee tailwater is known for superb hatches in the early spring and summer with multiple large and small bugs available to the trout.  The Little Truckee is renowned for it's large, wild trout that are very selective providing an excellent and challenging learning environment with dry flies.  This clinic will be occurring on the same weekend as the TVFF Truckee River outing.

Each event is separate and needs to be registered for individually, if you choose to attend both.  Registering for the Truckee River trip is optional if you so desire, or you can only register for the educational clinic.

                      Class Agenda:

This one day on-stream clinic with a full time instructor will focus on approaching the water and determining how best to anticipate what the fish may be consuming that day.  We will be looking at what food is in the water, how to anticipate from hatch charts what bugs and metamorphosis stages are likely at given times, and how to adjust during the day.  This is not a traditional fishing outing but an educational event structured around improving skills specific to the dry fly style of fly fishing.

This class is for intermediate fly fisherman and above, or with the instructor's approval.  A good knowledge of Entomology is helpful as we will be focusing on hatches with emergers, adults, and spinner stages.

                      Cost:

The class cost is $41.20 (includes 3% credit card fee)

                      Instructor: Rob Farris, RFFarris@comcast.net, (925)286-5502

Accommodations and Food: Lodging is available nearby in Truckee, CA, and the surrounding Lake Tahoe region.  Camping is also available in the area at several locations, including Stampede and Boca Reservoirs which are fully developed.

Each individual is responsible for their own food and accommodations.

                      Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Rod & line weights/types: 4, or 5 weight rods, reels and floating lines.

Leaders and tippet: Fishing style dependent but normally I fish a 9’ 4X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 4-6’ of 5 or 6X for the dry flies. Depending upon the weather we also hit a Trico hatch in early morning in which case you will need 7X for the #22-26 flies.

The hatches this time of year are legendary and we will seek to better understand how the weather and water are impacting the hatches. Typically you will need a full fly box of dry, emerger, and spinner offerings to coincide with the hatch chart that is available on the TVFF website Resources page here: Truckee River Hatch Chart

Mastering Indicator Nymphing Options & Solutions

How to make an ADJUSTABLE Dry-Dropper System

                      Event Skill Levels:

                      • Intermediate and above
                      • Previous knowledge and pre-class practice with a variety of fishing knots, leaders, and fishing styles.

                      Class Agenda:

This two -part class will dive into the understanding and use of a wide variety of indicators for nymphing with different fishing situations and conditions.  The following styles and solutions will be covered in depth:

                      1. Standard "hard" floatable indicators and advantages of different styles (i.e. from traditional "bobbers" to float and fly, to new generation Oros types).
                      2. Use of New Zealand yarn indicators for softer presentations and how to construct setups for an effective cast.
                      3. Use and construction of dry droppers in various water situations.  An expanded explanation and hands-on tying for use of "slidable" dry droppers, and the different solutions to effectively fish rivers and streams
                      4. Stillwater solutions, and adaptation to conditions.
                      5. Deep stillwater solutions and setups for "breakaway" deep water indicators.

This class is for intermediate fly fisherman and above, or with the instructors approval.  Class dates are Wednesday July 15, Wednesday July 22, and Saturday July 25 on stream.,

                      Cost:

The class cost is $41.20 (includes 3% credit card fee)

                      TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online (includes 3% credit card fee). There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

Yellowstone National Park Volunteer Fly Fishing Program - 2026

Note that this is not a sponsored TVFF trip; it is notification for those interested in volunteering their service and working for YNP during the program.  All expenses are the responsibility of each participant.

Also note that the six available slots are currently filled.  Last year we had a last minute cancellation, so if you interested as a possible replacement please feel free to sign up on the waitlist.

This opportunity is for high level intermediate and advanced fly fishers only.  It requires considerable hiking, backcountry, and deeply skilled fly fishing experience. The skills to assist the Native Fisheries Program Manager and Park biologists with native fish restoration and sustainability in Yellowstone National Park waters are critical elements to the success of the program.

We are fortunate once again to have been invited back to participate in the Yellowstone National Park Native Fisheries program for 2026, based on our past successful efforts and concern for the Park’s native fisheries.  This conservation work program will provide opportunities for up to six (6) individuals to participate from August 14 -20, 2026.

Registration on the TVFF website will open at 8:00 PM on January 6th for one (1)  available participant for 2026.

Waitlist registration will close on January 16, 2026 due to YVFFP needs to complete volunteer program staffing, so please register by the 16th to be considered.

The Park ultimately determines each year's participants and personally invited each of last year's six attendees based on last years experience.  This is not a sanctioned TVFF outing and focuses on specific volunteer conservation work.  Currently we have five (5) of last year's participants committed to return in 2026, however we have one open slot to add an individual who meets the rigorous requirements for the trip.   If you are interested in 2026 you must register on the waitlist to be considered and selected for the remaining slot.  As we know, “life happens” and there can be cancellations, so please register on the waitlist if the registration list appears full (like Rob throwing his back out again).

Please carefully read the following necessities to participate in the trip if you are interested, as they will be the determining factor on who will be selected to attend.  The additional individual for 2026 will be selected and recommended by last year's team consisting of the previous attendees with final validation and acceptance by the Yellowstone Volunteer Fly Fishing Program Manager.

Once again the volunteer program will is anticipated to return to Grebe and Wolf lakes in the Yellowstone backcountry where we will be camping for four days.  It is not for the faint of heart, and will involve significant hiking of up to 30 miles total over the four days.     We are not sure of exactly where we will be fishing each day in support of the program, so strong familiarity with all types and styles of fly fishing are a necessity (creeks, large rivers, lakes, dry, dry dropper, euro, indicator, and streamer, etc.).  Also please be aware that you will be fishing in areas heavily populated with wildlife including bison, bears, wolves, moose, nasty badgers, mountain lions, and others so familiarity with safety requirements and bear spray is a must.

                      Program Requirements:

This is a very rigorous trip, and you should think carefully about whether it is suitable for you this summer.  The following are some key elements to evaluate in your consideration as to whether to register for this trip:

                      • This year's trip will also encompass a three day high elevation pre-backcountry training session for acclimation and lakes training.  You will need to commit to a total of 7 days for this program, without travel.
                      • This includes a 4-day back-country hiking trip of over 30 miles, and although the Park animals will carry our camping gear in and out, you are responsible for carrying your fishing gear including the extended hiking trip to Wolf Lake.  Each day will require about 6-8 miles of total hiking and about ten hours of fishing before returning to camp for the evening.
                      • The trip takes place in country frequented by bears, elk, moose, “bad badgers” and wolves.  This requires everyone to be “bear aware” and experienced with carrying bear spray and animal avoidance.  Training on this is provided before the trip.
                      • Due to its location, we only enjoy (lol!) dehydrated meals (with light snacks) and carry only toiletries that are odorless.  Weight loss is an expected benefit.  Food and toiletries must be hung from the bear crossbars at night with no food or snacks allowed in the tents.
                      • You will need to be fully self-sufficient and experienced with back-country camping (no Airbnb facilities available for many, many miles…, sorry!).
                      • You will also need to be fully competent and experienced in all fly-fishing styles including dry fly, dry droppers, indicator nymphing, naked nymphing, potentially euro nymphing, and streamers.  This is not a “guided” trip, so you are expected to be fully capable in searching, determining proper setups, selecting your own flies, and completing the day’s activities on your own while maximizing safe catch and release processes.  While our trip is scheduled for the lakes, it may be relocated to other non-stillwaters for trip re-adjustments due to weather, wildlife issues, fire, Park demands and biologist requests, etc. and hence the need for accomplishment with multiple fly fishing styles and skills.
                      • You should very strongly consider an intensive program of winter and spring conditioning to equip yourself for the rigors of this trip.  Be aware that all locations are from 7-8,000 feet in elevation, and you should be prepared for frequent weather changes including heat, cold, rain, wind, and potentially snow at that altitude.
                      • This year’s trip will also require a 3-day pre-backcountry session to participate in high elevation conditioning as a group.  We will fish similar lake situations with appropriate hiking as “spring training” in Yellowstone for the outing.  This means that the trip will be for a minimum of eleven (11) days, although we all usually extend for post-trip fishing around the Park, or in the Grand Tetons based upon individual desire.
                      • Each individual is responsible for all transportation, lodging, licenses, and food expenses for the trip as this is a full volunteer effort.  In addition to those confirmed to participate a fee of $51.50 per individual is required and is donated to Yellowstone Forever.

Please note the following recommended considerations from the Yellowstone Volunteer Fly Fishing Program Director for those planning on participating:
                      1. "Your Health and Conditioning:  You must be able to hike at least 3 miles with moderate elevation gains, at a moderate pace.  If you volunteer and cannot do this, you'll force the rest of our group to proceed more slowly, causing us to take more time to reach our fishing destinations and therefore leaving us with less time to fish and to collect our data.
                      2. Your Fly-Fishing Ability: YFFVP volunteers will, ideally, be proficient fly fishers with all-around skills.  This program is not intended for fly-fishing beginners.  And it is not a "guided" fly fishing trip.  Are you competent fishing dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, and streamers both in still-water environments as well as rivers and creeks?  We need to catch as many as possible, to provide Yellowstone's biologists with as much data as possible.  So, if you're a fly fisher who only fishes dry flies, you won't be able to contribute if the fish are only eating nymphs.  And vice versa.  This is true for all the fly-fishing disciplines.
                      3. The YFFVP is Not a Normal Fly-Fishing Trip: We often fish designated sections of rivers and creeks which are shorter in length than we'd normally fish with a group of anglers outside the program.  We will fish very close to each other (spatial etiquette is not important among members of our YFFVP group).  We will be limited to where we can fish, so you can't decide to leave our beat or move to another location without the group.
                      4. You're Donating to Yellowstone's Native Fish: The YFFVP's budget is small.  We cannot provide or pay for housing for our volunteers.  You must pay for your own lodging to participate in the program.  YFFVP volunteers are also expected to pay for their Yellowstone National Park entrance fees, fishing license, food, drinks, and any other expenses incurred while participating in the program.
                      5. You need to Be Flexible: The YFFVP is constrained by many factors:  weather, water conditions, dealing with wild animals, safety concerns, and other things.  While we do our best to provide you with as much information as possible at the earliest dates possible, things that are beyond our control will force us to change plans.
                      6. You need to Be Committed to the Program:  None of us know with certainty what will be occurring in our lives during the summer of 2026.  Plans change.  Life happens.  But please do not apply for next year's program unless you are sure, with the information you have at this time, that you'll be able to participate.  Some volunteers with the best of intentions will most likely have to cancel next year.  That's ok.  But no one should apply unless they are planning to participate. “

                      Registration and Costs:

Registration is currently open for qualified fly fishers for 2026 and those on the waitlist.  Your final selection and registration secures your working position for the program once your non-refundable deposit is submitted ($51.50) Our trip costs will be donated to the Native Trout program with Yellowstone Forever at the conclusion of the program.

                      Skills Level:

                      Wading:  Easy to moderate

                      Catch Rate:  Easy to moderate

Hiking:  Easy to Moderate as you are walking and wading on the river and local smaller streams on cobblestones near the water

                      Prerequisite:

                      • Participants must have completed one of the Fundamentals of Fly Fishing classes in the last three years, or receive approval of the Director of Education.

Dates:  2 nights/3 days (day 1 is for driving to the location) outside of Downieville, Cal. on highway 49.

This clinic (there are no classroom sessions) is open to club members who have completed the first Fundamentals of Fly Fishing class and wish to advance their learning to a higher level. On this clinic/outing, you will have the opportunity to learn while on-stream with an instructor by your side for the two full days of fishing on the river.  This is a 3-day, 2 night overnight outing on the NF of the Yuba River, and does require waders and boots, and individual fly fishing equipment.  We will cover enhancing your skills with reading the water and selecting an appropriate style of fly fishing to be successful. Various water types will result in utilizing dry fly, dry dropper, indicator nymphing, and fishing with streamers on an intermediate level in each discipline.

Participants are responsible for their own lodging (either local lodges or camping with more information to follow for those that register) and are encouraged to carpool. The first afternoon is dedicated to travelling to the river (approximately 4 hours from Livermore through Grass Valley). The cost for this clinic is $51.50 (includes 3% credit card fee), and the maximum number of attendees is limited to six(6).

                      Cost:

Cost: The cost is $51.50 (includes 3% credit card fee)

Family Policy:  Spouses and family members under the age of 26 years old are included in each member's annual membership, and can attend events at no cost, unless TVFF has supplemental costs (such as guide or facility fees) for the event.  In such cases, each attendee must pay the appropriate event cost listed above.

                      Fishmeister:  Mitchie McCammon, sewreel@pacbell.net, (925)819-2039

                      Accommodations and Food:

Each individual is responsible for their own accommodations and food.  We will provide a list of local lodges, and campgrounds for those that register.

The NF Yuba is home to smaller brookies, rainbows, and browns.  There are significant riffles, runs, and pools which will dictate our approaches and terminal gear as we move throughout the river.  However this river is predominantly known as an excellent dry fly river for 3 or 4 weight rods. If you plan on throwing some streamer meat in the deeper pools you'll want a 5 or 6 weight rod as the current flow can require a stouter rod.

                       Striper Outing in CA Delta

The 2026 TVFF Striper Outing will be held on Saturday November 14th, weather permitting.  This outing requires a boat and we will try to pair interested Fisher people with members that have boats.  We are planning to launch from Russo's Marina in Bethel Island around 8am.

If you are the owner of a boat and would like to participate in this Outing but do not have room for a Boat Companion, please register with Ticket Type Stripers on the Delta - Boat Captain without space available for a Boat Companion.

If you are the owner of a boat and would like to participate in this Outing and have room for a Boat Companion, please register with Ticket Type Stripers on the Delta - Boat Captain with space available for a Boat Companion. I will coordinate Boat Captains with Boat Companions.

If you would like to be a companion on someone’s boat and participate in the Outing please register with Ticket Type Stripers on the Delta -Boat Companion. As the number of registered Boat Captains with space for a Boat Companion increases, I will register people from the waitlist to Stripers on the Delta - Boat Companion.

I will try to accommodate as many people as possible, but it is a function of how many boats we have participating.

This Outing is contingent on the weather as well.  If we get rained out, I will try to reschedule the event but if you’re a hardy soul and don’t mind the rain you are welcome to go ahead with the Outing.

Tight Lines and looking to hear from you

                      Cost:

                    Outing Basic Requirements

Membership:  You must be a TVFF member with a signed Liability Waiver on file to attend an outing.

Personal Flotation Device Requirements: In addition, “Each participant shall wear a Coast Guard approved protective safety flotation device (PFD/SFD) at all times while boarding, disembarking or on board the watercraft” and those Outings where participants use owned, rented or loaned watercraft such as, but not limited to, boats, canoes, kayaks, prams, pontoon boats and float tubes.

The requirement applies to participants in any Guided Float Trip, and is also strongly recommended if you are wading challenging waters.

                    Guest Requirements

TVFF welcomes guests on many of its outings throughout the year. If you plan on inviting a guest please contact your Fishmeister who will advise you of any additional requirements for guests. Note that ALL guests must sign the Club’s Liability Waiver in order to attend an outing. The waiver is available on the website Member’s Page, and must be signed and sent one week in advance of the Outing to the Club’s Treasurer at TVFF, P.O. Box 2358, Livermore, CA 94551.

                    Cancellation Policy

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online, or via check or cash, within two weeks of registering (sent to the TVFF Treasurer) whatever fee is described for that particular Event (trip) at the time of registration. There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

                    Effective Date: October 3, 2019

                    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Protocol

TVFF Outings Policy as of September 20, 2020

As a Club, the Tri-Valley Fly Fishers have developed and agreed to a set of required guidelines, protocols and rules in order to help direct our members on how to stay safe for one-day outings, multi-day outings, or individual “Tag-Alongs”.

These protocols were developed by the TVFF Board of Directors with input from other local clubs, which included a member virologist, various safety committees, and member experts.

Therefore, each member should review the following protocols that the Club subscribes to and make an individual decision of whether to participate in an activity or not, based upon their individual circumstances and requirements for personal and family member safety.

TVFF Outings protocols are as follows:

                    • If you are sick with cold/flu symptoms then we ask you to please stay home
                    • All attendees should drive up and back alone unless you are in a mutually agreed social bubble where both parties have been tested negative and agreed to the risk (such as family members)
                    • On all outings the Club will have available and use an infrared thermometer for temperature checks
                    • We believe in social distancing and require that all members keep a full fly rod distance of at least 6’ distance between parties
                    • We ask that all parties wear masks if within 6’ even if only briefly. Note that the CDC has not recommended the use of buffs or gaiters as the material is not thick enough for adequate protection.
                    • Everyone will be responsible for making, bringing, and consuming their own separate food and drinks
                    • When camping all members and guests are required to use separate camping tents, or rooms when hotels are arranged
                    • Please handle your own gear (and your own fish!) only. No sharing for doctored fish pictures.
                    • In the event that there are common surfaces (i.e., car surfaces, door handles, etc.) please wipe them down with sanitizer or hand wipes
                    • All attendees should wash and sanitize their hands frequently
